The Chinese Emotional Support Hotline is an Alberta wide initiative where our hotline provides emotional support, crisis intervention, needs assessment and resource referral services targeting the Chinese community, helping to overcome language & cultural barriers. The hotline was recently launched on April 12, 2021. Since then, the service has expanded to 24/7 operations and grown to more than 100 volunteers/supervisors and 20 staff members. The project has also received successful funding from the Alberta government and City of Calgary.
The hotline is a program is running under ECSSEN Career School, a registered non-profit charity helping immigrants gain Canadian experience and contribute their skills to the local community. The hotline is integrated with ECSSEN’s other programs including their free Food/Bread Delivery Program where our hotline helps to do direct intake for these other social service supports.

Position 1: Administrative officer
Tasks and Responsibilities
- Oversee and co-ordinate office administrative procedures and review, evaluate and implement new procedures.
- Establish work priorities, delegate work to office support staff, and ensure deadlines are met and procedures are followed.
- Carry out administrative activities associated with admissions to post-secondary educational institutions Administer policies and procedures related to the release of records in processing requests under government access to information and privacy legislation.
- Co-ordinate and plan for office services, such as accommodation, relocations, equipment, supplies, forms, disposal of assets, parking, maintenance and security services
- Conduct analyses and oversee administrative operations related to budgeting, contracting and project planning and management processes.
- Assist in preparation of operating budget and maintain inventory and budgetary controls.
- Assemble data and prepare periodic and special reports, manuals and correspondence.
- May supervise records management technicians and related staff.
Position 2: Marketing and advertising consultant
Tasks and Responsibilities
- Design market research questionnaires
- Plan development projects and co-ordinate activities with representatives of a wide variety of industrial and commercial enterprises, community and business associations and government agencies
- Assess business opportunities and develop strategies to attract venture capital 4. Conduct surveys and analyze data on the buying habits and preferences of wholesale or retail consumers.
- Evaluate customer service and store environments.
- Prepare reports, research papers, educational texts or articles.
- Plan and develop E-commerce strategies 8. Provide consultation on planning and starting of new businesses.
Position 3: Software developer
- Collect and document users’ requirements and develop logical and physical specifications.
- Research, evaluate and synthesize technical information to design, develop and test computer-based systems including mobile applications.
- Develop data, process and network models to optimize architecture and to evaluate the performance and reliability of designs.
- Plan, design and co-ordinate the development, installation, integration and operation of computer-based systems including mobile applications.
- Assess, test, troubleshoot, document, upgrade and develop maintenance procedures for operating systems, communications environments and applications software
- May lead and co-ordinate teams of information systems professionals in the development of software and integrated information systems, process control software and other embedded software control systems.

Under the COVID-19 pandemic, the Charity sees more and more urgent need for emotional support from Chinese community. We have recently launched a Chinese Emotional Support Hotline to help meet this pressing need.
The hotline was officially opened on April 12th, 2021 and is currently open 24/7/365. Our hotline phone number is 587-997-5977, free for anyone to call within Alberta. Our hotline is currently staffed by trained volunteers.

Hotline Listener Volunteers:
Time commitment = 2 hours per week
- Answering phone calls and listening callers through their stress, anxiety and other
- Providing information and making referrals to community service agencies
- Recognizing risk factors including, but not limited to, suicide, child safety, self-harm, and
- domestic violence, and addressing them with supervisors and crisis response services
- Must be fluent in Chinese (Mandarin) + have basic English skills
- Work from home
Hotline Supervisor Volunteers:
Time commitment = 4 hours per week
- Help monitor our frontline volunteer listener’s calls, provide feedback and act as a point
- of contact during volunteer shifts for any guidance
- Assisting volunteers in communication & providing emergency response plans during
- crisis situations (i.e. suicide, family violence, etc.)
- Help our volunteers search for community resources during their shift
- Must have relevant education or experience in related fields such as social work,
- psychology, counselling, mental health, helpline volunteering, community resource work,
- Must be fluent in both English & Chinese (Mandarin)

We currently plan to hire a Training Coordinator to build our training program, deliver the training & manage the training of our volunteers.

Duties and Responsibilities:
- Develop & present training modules related to emotional support & crisis intervention (child abuse, domestic voilence, suicide) in both Chinese & English to our volunteers
- Develop & present webinars to the Chinese public community on mental health topics
- Help orientate volunteers & supervisors during their first shifts
- Tailor culturally sensitive and community oriented training to support Chinese residents in Alberta
- Assess current & future training needs to make comprehensive training plans
- Consult with outside professionals to build & improve the training program
- Answer volunteer training related questions from volunteers and community partners
Qualifications:
- Relevant education or professional experience in related fields (Masters preferred), such as psychology, social work, counselling, therapy, or other mental health related fields.
- Preferred in depth experience with emotional support listening (distress line, addictions line, mental health line, etc.).
